Araps is the traditional easter climbing destination for many folks across NSW, VIC and SA. About 15 hours by car from Sydney or or more acceptable 3 hours from the airport in Melbourne Arapiles has everything from aretes, cracks, slabs and roofs. The rock here, despite being sandstone, is absolutely bombproof so unless there is a particularly black wall section, there are no bolts other than some of the loweroffs. Consequently you find that your grade drops a touch as you get back into the swing of placing wires and trusting your gear – despite this even some of the easier routes can provide a good test of nerve.
The campsite is about as basic as life can get with a toilet providing the only “facilities” – not bad tho for 2 bucks a night. Most people travel 30KM every few days to grab a shower in the nearest town, Horsham.
It is a truly beautiful place shared with many skinks, wallabies and echidnas. One that’ll certainly have you returning time and time again
