Setting off from Sydney solo on a 1200km road trip with a 6 year old to a camp site that has a bush toilet and a tank of rain water as its only amenities, I was definitely feeling like I had bitten off more that I could chew! I need not have worried tho – with good friends at the camp site and near perfect weather, plus a little road time entertainment courtesy of Apple an awesome trip was had by all
Arapiles is one of those climbing destinations that cant help to make you feel good about yourself. Over 30kms from the nearest warm shower and rising magnificently from the almost desert like plains, the bullet hard sandstone offers climbers every type of route from technical slabs, to horizontal roofs with bomber protection and even the odd bolt. A sports climbing venue it is not, but the addition of numerous bolt belays and abseil points does make negotiating the complex chasms and towers a little more straight forward. You can choose to spend your time ticking off the numerous easy classics or test yourself both mentally and physically on one of the harder test pieces but the outcome is always rewarding. If it all gets a bit to much theres always the boulders scattered along the bottom of the crag.
From a kids perspective it’s a constant adventure of playing campsite games, climbing, bouldering and checking out the local wildlife; if thats not enough theres also the media circus which turn up to film someone stuck in a boulder!
It wasn’t the standard climbing trip with time on rock having to be balanced with family time and kids climbing time but I couldn’t think of a better place to do it.Can’t wait to head back.
